A basic math lesson:

61 + 38 = 99

65 + 29 = 94

Which number is bigger? Who really won Texas?

Also, Neil Gaiman posted a link to the greatest crossover ever.

How cheaply do you think I can make a Renaissance noble dress, a peasant dress, and a Victorian dress? Details as events warrant.

(I wouldn't mind a job where I had less work to do the more the people beneath me screwed up, but it's not as cool when you're not getting paid for it. And that's all I'm sayin' about that.)

I need a tag just for library complaints... 10:32 am

SOMEBODY GET ALL THESE GODDAMN FRESHMEN OUT OF THE LIBRARY SO I CAN WRITE MY PAPER!

I considered amending this to explain that I mean no offense to any freshmen of any school level who may be reading this, but I'm not feeling charitable. No, you should all have to go to a separate freshman school so we don't have to look at you.

No love,

Question for any Firefox users... 10:34 am

Have you noticed an upswing in random program crashes since the last update? I've been getting at least one per day. I've also installed Firebug recently for faster de-bugging of my JavaScript programs. Anybody have any experience with it, good, bad, or ugly? This is getting a tad frustrating.

Just wonderin'...

Also, my list of things that are awesome:

* Beowulf. Might have more on that later.

* Peter Davison. Even all wrinkled and balding, he's still the cutest Doctor.

* David Tennant's in-character fanboying of said Peter Davison

You know what sucks about the library being re-termed a "learning center"? People suddenly think they can talk and play music however loud they want! And I just happen to be sitting in the 301s, oh my, whatever can this mean? Let's see, which U.S. President's complete works has the biggest book for smacking morons in the head...

FreeRice.com is the coolest thing ever. Improve your word power for a good cause!

Seriously, for every word you correctly define from a multiple choice list, a sponsor donates ten grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. There are 50 levels of word difficulty. The point is not to make everything too difficult for you; no food would ever get donated that way. The user receives a useful service, and they in turn generate food for the hungry.

School fuck-ups RARRR! 01:27 pm
Item 1: Transcript fuck-up. My transcript analysis last semester said that College Writing (no longer offered) exempted me from both C&C and Passport. My new transcript analysis says that I now have to take C&C. Uh, right, because an English major with a 4.0 clearly needs to take a freshman class on composition.

Item 2: Billing fuck-up. I just got a note that there's a hold on registering for next semester because I owe three thousand dollars. I got a $3000 scholarship last semester after my tuition had been paid, so I let it carry over to the fall, which the financial office said was an option. I got the same scholarship again at the beginning of this semester, for a $6000 credit total on my account. This was in black and white on my financial aid statement. My billing records now show one of those scholarships actually being used to pay for this semester's tuition. The other three thousand goddamn dollars have disappeared.

Trying to calm down enough to not yell at office workers before I go down there to sort things out. But really. HATE.

Last thing I need to see at 4:30 in the morning: An icon featuring one of those weeping angels from "Blink." Wasn't going to sleep in the first place, but now that's got creepy-crawlies associated with it.

But talking of Doctor Who, "The Sound of Drums" evened out into a decent episode by balancing the horrific aging makeup on David with the Greatest Line Ever.

The Master (to Lucy): Jellybaby?

The Master has risen to new heights of awesome. John Simm plays crazy guuuuuud.

Two days chained to a sewing machine has produced something like results. The doublet is two steps and an ironing session short of being done. Unfortunately, one of those steps is sewing 18 button holes and 18 buttons. I'll probably take it with me to school. My new shirt is progressing somewhat more slowly. Gathering ruffles for the neck and wrists took about six hours, and I had to work those in around the Riverssance Meeting From Hell. Phil has always saved the most random, damaging changes for about a week out, but after suffering two strokes he has even less logic about it. And forgive me if I'm wrong, but if exhibit A is a 12-year-old kid who's been to about five meetings and one grocery store promotion, and spends her time in rehearsals insisting that she should have a bigger role in an event she's not even supposed to be in, and exhibit B is a 17-year-old guy who joined in May, has already done three faires with us, breezed through Academy, and will cheerfully take on any role he's offered, you be the judge... Which of these people deserves to be recognized as "Best Newbie"? Now work out which one of them Phil gave it to. Of course, he's never actually seen either of them in a performance situation. I doubt he'd show up at faire if he didn't have to stop us from the crime of opening on time. He probably thinks Charlie's been here the whole time. Hell, he's spent the last two years thinking Zach was dating little Julie! So wrong, so many levels.

Why, yes, I am avoiding yet more Emerson!

ETA: Dude, how did I not know that Christopher freakin' Timothy was in an episode of Lord Peter Whimsey? I will not rest until I have seen it! It's either Murder Must Advertise or The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, and if it's the latter I am going to just kick myself.

I want the fucking parking lot back. Raining today, drove to school for the first time this semester, had to park a block off campus (first class is right in the middle) and walk half a mile in the rain with my computer. How long is this goddamn construction project going to take again? If I go out there with a whip and a glare, will it make them work faster?

So now I'm up in a beanbag among the stacks, as usual, drinking my first double espresso of the semester. -_- Mmm... Concentrated caffeine.

Honest cafeteria menus we'd like to see: Orzo with spinach and the contents of a dozen saltshakers. Pre-digested turkey tacos. Sugar water with a shot of cranberry flavoring.

I think I'm going to live on cottage cheese and bagels. Or are the bagels stale? Must do some research.

I plan to retaliate by making Caribbean pork roast tonight. ^_^

Anyway, three classes down and one to go. Web design is way too easy, but hey, it's only a freshman class and it gets me out of doing real math. After this semester, I just have to meet a religion flag (thinking Medieval History) and I'm done with cores.

Shirt is reaching emergency state. Sewing machine doesn't have the power to stitch through two layers of linen, and whenever I set aside time to make the stupid thing by hand I forget my thread across town. I've done the neck gussets, narrow hemmed the front slash and the ruffles, and started stitching interlining to the collar. That's it. One and a half days to go...

Alas, I have resorted to dial-up. 04:07 am
Dear school of mine, I have a question: If my express line registration packet had to be in by the 5th, why don't we get the express line list before validation day?

A brief continuation of the dress diary:

All pieces are cut out, both for shirt and bum roll, but it doesn't bode well that I'm on step 2 of the instructions and already confused. Never worked with gussets before, not quite sure what the purpose is, even less sure of what it means to "swivel" one after stitching down one side.

Since I still can't get a wireless signal, I haven't done any more fabric searching.

At last! I get my beeyooteeful new laptop (and new ID with bonus vending machine action in which you can see this alien thing on my skin commonly known as a TAN, and now I will never again take a new ID picture because I am just So Happy), and my wireless connection goes dead for three days. Right after I become the new resident Co-Dance Nazi and double my e-mail volume with the character directors. I hate being out of touch, but not quite so much as I hate dial-up. So I stuck with out of touch and wrote Corey a novella of an e-mail (by my standards, three paragraphs on dance rehearsals should count as an epic) to make up for it.

Anyway, LJ is cheerfully reassuring its users that some techie can decide your subjects look underage a whole two times before you get bolded for being a nasty pedo. You can, however, promote anorexia nervosa without fearing so much as a slap on the wrist. (Smutty fanart in which "overage" fictional characters look 17-and-a-bit = no-no, but real teens and adults striving to have little girls' bodies = OK? I'm no great shakes at math, but something in this equation doesn't make sense.)

In off-line news, I have taken the first step in the complete rebuild of my noble wardrobe. Since I now have access to a digital camera and a fair bit of know-how, I figured it's time to do my first dress diary, like all the cool Renkids out there.

Cut for pictures and geekery. )

Overall, decent movie. Pacing problems, of course, but much better than GoF. I think I would have made it about 15-30 minutes longer, and that would have done a great deal. Camera work was nice. Not revolutionary, but nice, and that's another huge improvement on the last film. [Something to think about: If GoF had been any good, would I have cared for this one much?] Script much better. Dreading the return of Teh Kloves.

Well, it's about time those DH spoilers started to get entertaining! Pretty interesting stuff, but if they're true it looks like most of the plot movement comes from people finally spilling what they could have said in five minutes, five years ago, at little personal cost to themselves. No like. What I do like, should these be true, is a certain couple that I have a soft spot for and you shan't hear who it is but I just like it.

At least nobody's claiming to have sneaked copies on the Pope's orders now. And a glance at the chapter titles will tell me if these are true in about two weeks. The only thing is, the book comes out all of 10 hours before the second weekend of Academy starts. Do I drag my super-caffeinated self to a high-energy workshop, or do I wait until Monday and feast on reviews in my free moments over the weekend?

Ha. Fuck that shit, no way will I let other people finish this book before I do.

This program was brought to you by the letter C, as in Conspicuously Absent, as in certain publications of the Dean's List and 4.0 list on which certain names should appear, considering the flood of congratulatory mail comparing certain people to Barbra Streisand (um, thanks?) that poured in a week after finals. Maybe the list is only for people who had to try for the grade? There, I said it.

I don't know how people do it. Over the past year or so, the owners of several blogs I follow lost parents or other close relatives, and they posted about it immediately and often. To put it lightly, I will not be doing that. I am going to write about Ella sometime soon, before I forget everything about that week, but I'll shock the hell out of myself if I make that entry anything less than private. Apparently I've done enough public grief to last me for a while.

So...

PotC3 was surprisingly good. But that may just be because I was glad to escape the graduation party and go hang out with a dozen friends. It was a nice romp with slightly less painful pacing than the last one. Plus, Geoffrey Rush (doesn't count as spoiler for 2 because, hello, he's got billing on the damn poster). Quick spoilerful observations. )

In about 12 hours I'm heading up to Sioux Falls for my first ever faire camping trip. The people we were supposed to be staying with for free (have I posted about this already?) have drama issues with SRA, so they withdrew the offer. Cheapest hotel I could find was $53/night, while we could camp (with on-site showers) right across the street for twenty bucks a night. Gas, campsite fees, and food will come to less than lodging alone would have cost at a hotel. Split that four ways and you have some happy Rennies. Will we be as happy when we face the ordeal of dressing two noblewomen in a tent, in the dark, while also trying to get breakfast made without setting anybody on fire? Maybe not, but unless I have to give the neighbors a detailed demonstration on the destructive properties of the flamberge (relax, we're not really taking the flamberge), the benefits should outweigh the costs. But then, I'm not the one who has to lace my bodice.

The blue dress is definitely reaching Falling Apart status. Seams are still holding, at least, but the rain in New Ulm was like superglue on the wrinkles. Even after a thorough ironing, it looks like I made it out of crushed velvet. Unless I get a major coupon from Joann's (or make it to Hancock before it closes), I'm sticking with this one through our faire, but by next year there will be another dress. It will a) be made of decorator fabric, b) feature a doublet bodice, and c) have Italian sleeve options. Zach wants to go either hobbit or mercenary, so I'm thinking it's time Riverssance got itself a Medici.

Oh, come on, Face of Boe! Surely you can do better than that!
That statement had better apply to The Master or something nicely meta. Otherwise, Doctor, Rose could have told you that one.

I love me my spoiler posts. Stops me wasting more procrastination time than I've got on YouTube. I need an icon of Dr10. 'Cept I can't because paid account is lapsed, probably for good until DJ gets some much needed updates. Really ought to give up the ghost and move to LJland, but... Is it true what I hear about the update form no longer using HTML tags? Wusses. But more icons. But wusses. But icons! Wah.

ETA: Okay, now that I'm sitting more or less pretty on my final paper (Aaaand tonight it's Joseph Conrad vs. Francis Coppola! Who will emerge victorious?) it's time for some real procrastinating. I will do the IMDb keyword meme, stolen from [info]ladysathyd and others. I'll try to be nice and give a good hint with at least one of the keywords, but that also means I can be really obscure with the other two if I like.

* Go to IMDB.com and look up 10 of your favorite movies.
* Post three official IMDB "Plot Keywords" for these 10 picks.
* Have your friends guess the movie titles.

1. Part of Trilogy. Dysfunctional Family. Father Son Relationship. (1972)
2. Cafe. Flashback Sequence. Bittersweet. (1942)
3. Color Tints. One Armed Man. Based on True Story. (1993)
4. Diabetes. Nonlinear Timeline. Obscene Finger Gesture. (2000)
5. Insanity. Actual Animal Killed. Wagner Ride of the Valkyries. (1979)
6. Deja Vu. Dyed Hair. Beach. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind guessed by undead_sadist.
7. Character Name in Title. Katana Sword. Nightclub. Kill Bill Vol. 1 guessed by [info]aerethus.
8. Platonic Love. Dying Young. Author. (2004)
9. Cat. Rainstorm. Fire Escape. (1961)
10. Left Handedness. Small Town. Brother Sister Relationship. (1962)

I think several of these are painfully obvious, while a couple of others should be pretty difficult to work out. Have at it! If people are totally stumped, I will add years, followed by principal actors (hopefully it won't come to that, since several of them would be just ruined).

The real trick will be seeing if I can remember which ones these are!

ETA: Okay, time to add some years. I think I've officially given away one of these, and probably a couple more as well.

How on earth did I get to a 99.7% in Citizenship? I've been either on the edge of or actually in the A- range all semester. Well, yes, I know how it happened: Kicked ass on second test, got extra cred, made up for the average 1-3 points lost on other assignments, and the rest is history. But still. That's the class I survive by not caring. Meanwhile, I have another 99% in art history, one more prime example of "I don't care", but I'm down to 95% in lit crit, for which I more or less try to hand in decent work.

Logical conclusion: Don't try. You get better grades. It's all very zen.

One must not be gauche about this, however. Swaggering in the door and announcing to one's friends that one did not do the reading, one hates this class like, so much, and one should totally not be required to do anything not related to one's major (which is... basketball?) has been proven to have quite the opposite effect. The first rule of not caring is to never, ever say so in the classroom. It has ears. It has powers beyond our ken. It will have vengeance.

In short: Duuuude, I saved my 4.0 from the gen ed class from hell! *pets GPA* Maybe I don't hate the poli-sci department so much after all. Maybe... Maybe I should really try some of that pre-law stuff next year! It'd sure be nice to find a career where I could make my college tuition back in a year and afford good nursing homes for parents and Be Too Busy to See In-Laws. Those first two probably won't be a huge issue regardless, but really, what better career is there for Not Seeing In-Laws than the noble practice of law? Especially because, like all people who fear things with more power than them, they hates lawyers ever so much. I should, I totally should.

Updates for poetry month forthcoming when and if I finish bibliography and readings for class that's in just under 8 hours. See? Told you I didn't care.
